Monaco not giving up on Diego López

By on 02:52

Diego López's name has come up repeatedly during the discussions between Real Madrid and Monaco to seal the transfer of James Rodríguez. Monaco are seeking a goalkeeper to compete for the position with their Croatian keeper Danijel Subasic, who was first choice between the posts last season ahead of Sergio Romero. The Argentinian star was on loan from Sampdoria and is now expected to go back to his parent club.

The Principality outfit previously had a deal in place to sign Barcelona's Víctor Valdés, but he failed to get through the medical a few weeks ago and the deal has now fallen through.

So this is where López comes in. After coming to Madrid in January 2013 he became José Mourinho's number 1, and continued as first choice in league matches under Carlo Ancelotti. All this has placed him in the international shop window as one of the most attractive goalkeepers on the market.

Monaco are looking for a reliable pair of hands and 'Los Blancos' have opened the door for López to depart. Having decided to sign Costa Rica international keeper Keylor Navas from Levante, López been selected to make way for him, with Ancelotti and his assistants preferring to hold on to Iker Casillas and for him to dispute the first-choice position with Navas. However, it is not as simple as that, as the former Celta man has so far quelled all talk of leaving the Bernabéu, insisting he wants to stay and fight for a place.
