Diego López is continuing to play without any sign of weakness. Each
day his claim to be Real Madrid's starting keeper is gaining in
strength, and he seems to be completely immune to any controversy
surrounding Casillas being dropped.
At San Mamés, he played his sixteenth game with Real Madrid since the 'Blancos' bought him as an emergency signing to cover for the injury to Iker Casillas. And he has proven to be as safe as houses between the sticks.
If Cristiano saved the day with his blistering shots up front, then Diego López was the safe pair of hands keeping things calm at the other end. This weekend, his saves proved to be decisive once again, helping Real Madrid out when the team needed him the most.
Diego López already has an array of first-class saves during the three months he's spent with the 'Blancos'. And on Sunday he made another two picture-book saves to add to the collection, somehow managing to get to two shots that seemed to be sure-fire goals.
For the first, he blocked a shot to the back post from Ibai, and for the second he somehow managed to get the tips of his fingers to a missile Herrera had sent goalwards. These two saves managed to stop Athletic dead just as the Basque team was building up a head of steam.
It seems that we've moved on from a Real Madrid side starring CR7 and Casillas to one starring CR7 and Diego López. The new recruit isn't giving Iker a look in, with the captain forced to sit on the sidelines for the last ever game Madrid will play in the stadium where he got his 'Primera División' debut back in 1999.
The team's record since Diego López has been in goal is two defeats, three draws and 11 wins. And it now seems clear that Mou is going to stick with Diego López until the very end.
