Tongues are wagging around the Camp Nou. It seems that it is not
enough that Barcelona has not lost once in the last eight official games
it has played this season, that it sits at the top of La Liga, having
won all five of its matches, that in these games it has scored 18 goals
(four more than last year), or that it already has picked up some
silverware (The Spanish SuperCup).
Having less possession of the ball in the Rayo Vallecano game (51%-49%), has sparked further debate over whether Barça is changing the way it plays.
The club had enjoyed 315 matches in which it always had the ball at its feet for more minutes than its rivals, with the constant passing around of the ball cause for much applause. A typical game would see Barça with a possession of around 65%, although some said that it was not able to create so many goal opportunities in all that time.
Tata Martino is trying to change this problem. This season, we have seen a much more vertical Barcelona, and a much more effective one, too. Against Rayo, for example, it lost the ball on various occasions, but ended up scoring four times.
