The draw has been made for the European section of the 2014 World Cup
qualifying playoffs, with the most eye-catching tie pitting Cristiano
Ronaldo's Portugal against an extremely dangerous Sweden side led by
Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The other three match-ups thrown up by the draw, which was held at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, see Greece take on Romania, Iceland meet Croatia and the Ukraine lock horns with France. Big-name stars such as Karim Benzema, Franck Ribéry, Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Georgios Samaras and Konstantinos Mitroglou will be scrapping to keep their World Cup dream alive.
Having failed to take care of business during the group stages, each of the eight playoff hopefuls now has a second bite of the cherry in a make-or-break double-header showdown spread over five days. The first legs will take place on Friday 15th November, while the return legs are scheduled for the following Tuesday 19th November.
Portugal, Greece, Croatia and the Ukraine were all seeded in the draw, based on their positions in the FIFA World Rankings as of this past Thursday, 17th October.
However, it was Sweden, France, Romania and Croatia that had the advantage of being drawn away in the first leg, meaning they will play the all-important return leg in front of their own fans.
The draw is as follows:-
Portugal-Sweden
Ukraine-France
Greece-Romania
Iceland-Croatia
