The history of the Ballon d'Or has close ties to that of Real Madrid.
'France Football' founded the award back in 1956 and the first winner
was England international and Blackpool legend, Sir Stanley Matthews.
This was a prelude to Spanish football's dominance. Spanish-based players won the next four trophies: Di Stefano twice (1957 and 1959), Kopa (1958) and Luis Suárez (1960). No Spanish-born player has won the award since then, although four Real Madrid players have: Figo (2000), Ronaldo (2002), Cannavaro (2006) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2013).
Another four players who signed for 'Los Blancos' had already won the trophy before arriving at the Bernabéu: Zidane (1998/Juventus), Owen (Liverpool/2001), Kaká (Milan/2007) and Ronaldo (Manchester United/2008).
