As Carlos Ancelotti had hinted in the build-up, both Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale were omitted from the starting XI to face Osasuna. The Italian opted to rest the pair ahead of the huge Champions League semi-final second-leg clash in Munich, with the Welshman in fact not even named on the bench.
Cristiano Ronaldo, on the other hand, was handed a starting berth, partnering young forward Álvaro Morata up front. Pepe, Dani Carvajal, Fabio Coentrao and Xabi Alonso were also given a breather, making way for Raphaël Varane, Nacho Hernández, Marcelo and Asier Illarramendi.
