Despite the victory for 'Les Bleus', the Real Madrid forward did not play well and received a hostile reception from the home fans at the Stade de France.
Karim Benzema continues to have an uneasy relationship with France fans.Despite 'Les Bleus' beating Georgia 3-1 in Paris on Friday, the Stade de France did not give the Real Madrid forward the best of receptions after he delivered a less than inspiring performance. The fact that earlier in the week Benzema declared he would not sing the national anthem, 'La Marseillaise', may have also been a factor in their hostile treatment of him.
The reaction of the fans to Benzema on Friday adds to a general feeling that he should not be a regular starter in Didier Deshamps' side. A survey in influential sports newspaper L'Equipe last February revealed that 78% of respondents wanted to see the Madrid striker relegated to the substitutes bench.
The day before the survey was conducted, Benzema had been booed off the pitch at the Stade de France after France lost 1-2 to Germany in a friendly.
On the contrary, Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane was widely applauded for his performance against Georgia, and the 19-year-old could be in the starting line-up again when France host Spain next Tuesday.
