Operation Deadwood

By on 20:28

Before any new arrivals come in, space has to be made. While the Real Madrid higher-ups get down to designing the club's most ambitious project (more ambitious even than the super-production of 2009), the club's president has taken pen to paper, and has done some sums. Florentino knows that a great investment will have to be made to rebuild the team in the post-Mou era.
Months ago, Florentino budgeted for this summer an investment amount of €100 million for signings, which is half of what the club is now thinking it will need for plans at hand. Where then will the other €100 million come from? Quite clearly, from transfers. In 2009, Real Madrid invested €250 million in Cristiano, Kaká, Benzema, Alonso, Albiol, Arbeloa and Granero, but reaped €100 million from the sale of Saviola, Heinze, Miguel Torres, Javi García, Parejo, Neredo, Bueno, Huntelaar, Sneijder and Robben.
Then, 17 players left the club. This summer much the same could happen. Carvalho and Essien's contracts are very soon up. Adán, Coentrao, Pepe, Di María, Higuaín and Kaká are also all transferable. The cost of having these eight players on the payroll amounts to €30 million a year. Carvalho finishes his contract and will be looking for a last signing in some exotic part of the footballing world where he may assure himself a comfortable retirement – Russia or Qatar, for example. Essien, on loan from Chelsea, will more than probably be following the footsteps of his "Daddy Mourinho", and be heading back to London.
Goalkeeper Antonio Adán has offers from Getafe and Levante in the Spanish First Division, and Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. Los Blancos would be wanting at least €2 million from such a deal.
