Marcelino: “What Cristiano did wasn’t worth a red card”

By on 00:10

Ayza Gámez frozen out: “I don’t think that Ayza Gámez has been sent to the cooler because it’s Cristiano, it will be for something but it’s not for me to comment on”.

Possible penalty on Di María at El Madrigal in Week 4: “I had no problems with the refereeing when we met Real Madrid earlier in the season. There was talk about a possible penalty but the player didn’t appeal for it...”

Do you think the current debate over refereeing could affect Saturday’s match at the Bernabéu? “All kinds of things have happened to us so far this season and the last thing we needed was to be in this situation where, because a player was sent off last week, there is a possibility that it might influence our game in Madrid. Personally, I don’t think what happened in Bilbao should affect this game, we have complete faith in the ref’s impartiality and we won’t be going there worrying that the ref might put a few decisions Madrid’s way – we won’t be thinking that way. What does worry me is Real Madrid and their players – not the ref”.

Bruno’s back: “We’ve recovered Bruno and that’s great news for everyone. We had wondered whether he would be fit in time but he’s back with us”.

Cristiano’s sending-off: “I can’t really say whether what happened to Cristiano was fair or not, but judging by what he did, to me it seems very little to merit a red card”.

Absentees: “Regarding those who aren’t available, we are in a much worse situation than Madrid. Madrid can’t complain that they have one player who cannot play – even if he is an important player or a decisive player. I don’t think it’s right to start talking about absentees when the price they paid for Bale is twice the budget I have for the whole team”.

The key to beating Madrid: “Against Real Madrid you have to be perfect. There is a massive difference between Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético and the rest of the teams – mainly because of the difference in spending power Madrid and Barça have. So, to surprise them at their stadium will be very difficult”.

Torpedoing Madrid at the Bernabéu*: “We’ll be going their with the intention of pulling a surprise and while that’s not easy, football can pull up surprises every so often. They go into the match on the back of a very demanding Cup tie and now they have to face us, put in a good display in front of their fans and win the game. Regarding Perbet or Pereira, I have already decided who will play, but obviously I am not going to say until the day of the game. Both of them are playing well and the decision wasn’t an easy one for me to make”.
*Villarreal have never won at the Bernabéu, in 14 visits, they have drawn three and lost 11.
