It has been 25 years since Johan Cruyff entered the fray as the FC
Barcelona manager and laid the foundations of what has become the
essence of the 'azulgrana' outfit's current style of play.
The Dutchman, a Barça player in the '70s, was called in to manage the team on 4th May, 1988. The president at the time, Josep Lluís Núñez, hired Cruyff to carry out one of the most spectacular squad overhauls ever and usher in a new era. It would end up being one of the brightest in the club's history.
When Cruyff arrived at the Catalan club, he was given a blank chequebook to revolutionise a team on the way out - one rife with internal conflicts, which even led the players to publicly call for Núñez to step down.
The Dutchman was one of the favourites of those who opposed Núñez for the 1989 elections, but the club president ended up beating them to the punch.
During Cruyff's first two seasons, he introduced a style of play which has endured to the present day, which emphasised ball possession and the spectacle for the fans above all else.
After winning four consecutive league titles, a Copa del Rey and a Cup Winners' Cup, Barcelona was on the brink of taking Europe by storm, but crashed out against Milan (4-0) in the Champions League final. That proved to be the beginning of the end for the Dutchman.
