Novak Djokovic made light work of Portugal's
Joao Sousa as he powered into the second round at a rain-affected
French Open on Monday.
The second seed arrived at Roland Garros looking to build on his
triumph over world number one Rafael Nadal to win the Internazionali BNL
d'Italia last weekend.
And the Serbian got off to a convincing start in Paris with a 6-1 6-2 6-4 victory on day two of the tournament.
Djokovic wasted little time in racing into a 4-0 lead on Court Philippe
Chatrier, but saw his own serve broken in the fifth game as Sousa
threatened a comeback.
However, the Serbian was back on top in the sixth as he won to love on Sousa's serve before seeing out the set.
The players shared the opening four games of the second set, before Djokovic claimed the next four in a row to go two clear.
Adverse weather conditions played a part throughout, and Djokovic
entertained the Parisian crowd with the help of an umbrella-wielding
ball boy during a second brief break in set two.
The 27-year-old was not at his best in the third, but managed to
outnumber his opponent by three breaks to two and book a meeting with
Jeremy Chardy in the second round.
