Carles Puyol will bid farewell to Barcelona on Thursday and commence a new chapter in his life. There is plenty of speculation as to where the Catalan will end up after leaving the Nou Camp behind, and one of the destinations being touted is MLS.
A number of rumours and links between Puyol and MLS have been published in recent months. Some of the possible destinations mentioned have been the New York Red Bulls, Los Angeles Galaxy, and New York City FC – one of the new MLS franchises due to kick off in 2015.
In March, Puyol's former teammate at Barcelona and current Red Bulls player, Frenchman Thierry Henry, expressed his admiration for the defender and his desire for Puyol to decide to join MLS. "If he wants to come and play in the United States then he would be very welcome. Should he want to come, it would be great. It would be good for the league because it is always good to have players like him," said Henry.
If Puyol does not join Henry at the Red Bulls, the Big Apples's other club may be an option. New York City FC, with Manchester City as one its main investors, has its own Catalan connection. Former Barça vice president Ferran Soriano is the CEO of Manchester City and Barcelona's former director of football, Txiki Begiristain, now occupies the same role at the English club.
