Maria Sharapova was delighted to get her opening match at the French Open out of the way without any surprises on Monday.
The seventh seed needed little more than an hour to defeat fellow
Russian Ksenia Pervak 6-1 6-2 on a day that saw proceedings delayed due
to rain.
Sharapova's powerful ground strokes and excellent movement proved too
much for her opponent to handle on Court Philippe Chatrier.
After beating Pervak for the second time in the French Open first
round, following a straight-sets triumph in 2010, the world number eight
declared herself satisfied.
"It's always nice to get out there on a day like this," Sharapova said
in her post-match press conference. "It's good to play (the) first
match, (and) it's always nice to get through.
"The first matches at grand slams are always tough, no matter how prepared you are, no matter how many matches you've played.
"There is always a bit more tension in that type of grand slam atmosphere.
"It's certainly more special, especially when you walk out on court.
Considering all that, I thought I played a solid match, did the things I
had to do."
Sharapova will now meet Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round in Paris.
