Barça, the couch potatoe champion?

By on 11:41

The late and great Helenio Herrera came out with the famous line about "winning without even getting off the bus", and Barcelona could do just that today without kicking a ball - rather, kicking back on the couch at home. There is one condition, however - for Real Madrid to lose against Pellegrini's Málaga. If Los Blancos draw or lose, Los Culé may proclaim themselves league champions, as Real would need 10 or 11 points to beat them, with only 9 points to be played out.
Such is the Azulgrana squad's first 'match-point' of the week, the second being on Saturday, with the same if-clauses for Real Madrid, this time playing against Espanyol.
If Los Vikingos manage to win both these matches, then it will be time for the Barça players to don their boots and go out onto the Calderón pitch of Atlético Madrid, and wrap things up there. If they win, of course.
The Barça players will be keen to see how the next Real Madrid game turns out, but will not be watching it together. Each player will be watching it from the comforts of his own home, and the people who will be out celebrating it - if indeed this proves to be the case - will be the fans. The man most distanced from the proceedings will be Tito Vilanova, who will be in New York, undergoing routine medical checks.
It is precisely because of the manager's absence that all celebrations will be put on hold until the Monday after, the day that the team will tour the streets of Barcelona in an open-top bus, followed by a party in the Camp Nou.
