Medical mysteries at Barcelona

By on 11:43

"I haven't spoken with Valdés. The doctors told me that he was injured, but I don't know exactly how long he'll be out for. I hope he's back as soon as possible", was Tito Vilanova's answer to the last question at the press conference following his side's game against Betis. Valdés missed the game with a case of plantar fasciitis, but nothing else is known.
The shot-stopper is the latest case of a player with a medical condition that the club has been very hush-hush about. Valdés started the game against Bayern and on Friday Barça confirmed that he hadn't trained because he had problems with his left foot. The following day a medical opinion was provided: "Injury with plantar fasciitis". And that's that.
There was also scant explanation about Leo Messi only playing 35 minutes against Betis, after missing the whole game against Bayern because he experienced "strange sensations". At no point did Barcelona announce that Messi was a doubt.
Another example is what has happened with Carles Puyol. Ramón Cugat, the doctor who operated on him, assured that he would be out for between a month and a month and a half. Puyol's operation was on 15th March. In a week's time that will have been two months ago and nothing has been said about the centre-back.
Another man down, and for at least a month and a half now, is Sergio Busquets, who has been experiencing "problems with his pubis" and who missed the game against Bayern.
