Paraguay’s José Luis Chilavert has been one of the greatest
goalkeepers in the world for the past 20 years. Champion of everything,
his voice carries a great deal of authority in South America as a whole.
Marca.com met up with him in Buenos Aires, where he fiercely defended
Iker Casillas against the attacks of José Mourinho. “Mou is being
inconsistent when he says that Casillas regards himself as superior: he
is the one who conducts himself badly; he cannot see his own faults,
only those of others. What I want to say to Mourinho is that the number
ones in this world are untouchable, and Iker Casillas is still by far
and away the best”.
'Chila' believes that a grave injustice is being done to the Real Madrid goalkeeper. “It is true that Diego López is doing a good job, but, out of respect for Casillas’s record, the Real Madrid manager ought to let him play a game now. You can’t just leave him on the bench and end his season badly. There are very few goalkeepers like him and they have to be looked after”.
The ex-Paraguay ‘keeper, who lives in Buenos Aires, says this: “I advise Iker to have patience and the wisdom to see this situation out. He should remain calm in the knowledge that the supporters love him and know his worth. Mourinho can get things wrong, but the real situation is that without Iker, Real Madrid has no definite identity between the posts”.
