Johan Cruyff watched the first ever official meeting between
Barcelona and Ajax last night at the Amsterdam ArenA from one of the
boxes inside the stadium in the Dutch capital, accompanied by his former
charge Ronald Koeman.
After the match, which the Catalans lost 2-1 to the Dutch champions, the former Barça player and coach took another swipe at the club's president, his sworn enemy Sandro Rosell.
"Barça have to ask themselves why the team used to be able to do things it is no longer capable of," he said.
He was then asked about Gerardo Martino's team's style of play.
"It's an eternal debate and nothing has changed but I'm not going to get involved in the debate, because it's the type of conversation you have in the bar."
On the significance of the absence of Messi, Cruyff pointed out that the Argentinian talisman was not the only player missing, with Dani Alves, Adrinao, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also out injured.
"They didn't just miss Messi, they were missing a lot of players, and they played at a slow pace. But Barça have nothing to worry about."
His analysis of why the hosts won the fixture was simple yet damning from a Barça point of view.
"When a team plays really well, dominates and creates chances, which is what Ajax did, then you expect them to win the match."
