The Swedish media have not given up hope of qualifying for the 2014
World Cup, despite falling to a narrow defeat in Lisbon in a game that
saw the good, the bad and the ugly from Cristiano Ronaldo, who has come
in for criticism for some unseemly behaviour.
"You can't count out Sweden yet", is the headline in 'Dagens Nyheter'. "This team has survived walks through the Valley of Death before", the paper stresses, in reference to the country's previous epic comebacks.
Another broadsheet, 'Svenska Dagbladet', is less optimistic. In a report entitled "Second best at half-time", it points out that Sweden should be "happy" to still be in the tie, having deserved to concede more than once. Zlatan "will have to do better in the return leg", it continues.
The tabloids 'Aftonbladet' and 'Expressen' preferred to focus on the petulant antics of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was booked after leaving his foot in on Swedish goalkeeper Isaksson and later gestured to headbutt full-back Lustig. "Outrage at Ronaldo's behaviour... but we're still going to the World Cup" reads the front page of 'Expressen', which argues that Sweden deserved better.
Sebastian Larsson claimed that Ronaldo could have been sent off, although in general the team downplayed the events. "I was furious with him, so I went over and gave him an earful. He headbutted me ever so slightly, hitting me on the eyebrow, but that was as far as it went", Lustig admitted.
'Aftonbladet' highlights a "bad-tempered" display from Ronaldo, who nevertheless ended the match "a hero", unlike Ibrahimovic: "Zlatan has still yet to make the difference for his country when it needs him most".
