Pepe is one
of the driving forces behind Real Madrid's spectacular unbeaten run. Under the
leadership of Carlo Ancelotti, the Portuguese centre-back has returned to his
best and has become a key and indispensable part of the 'Los Blancos' outfit.
In five
months, Pepe has gone from being a transfer option to shoring up the team's central
defence.
Fitness is a
crucial factor in Pepe finding his current form. For the first time since being
at Real Madrid, the centre-back has not had a single injury. The Portuguese
player has appeared in 27 of this season's 31 games, playing the full 90
minutes in all. He has only missed one due to suspension following an
accumulation of cards and another three by rotation. He is the only Real player
to have played every minute of this Champions League campaign.
This season
Pepe is also shaking off his reputation for being a dirty player which has
plagued him over the years. The Portuguese player has now gone more than two
years without being sent off.
It is the
Portuguese star's offensive contribution that is setting him apart from the
crowd. In fact, this is his best goalscoring season, as he has never before
snagged himself three goals at this point in the campaign. They have also added
four points to Real Madrid's league total, which could be decisive at the end
of the championship.
