Real Valladolid caused a huge shock in Saturday's first Liga BBVA
game as they beat FC Barcelona 1-0 at the José Zorilla thanks to a first
half Fausto Rossi strike.
The home side refused to let their more illustrious visitors settle into their usual gameplan, hussling and harrying them at every opportunity. Indeed it was Valladolid who asked early questions, although Barcelona always pose danger on the counter attack. Messi had the game's first real chance as he carried the ball away from a Valladolid corner, however Mariño was equal to his effort. Poor finishing was the story of Barcelona's afternoon as, truth be told, rarely forced the home side's goalkeeper into a save.
Fausto Rossi was the quickest to latch on to a bouncing ball in the area after 17 minutes and swept the ball past Victor Valdés as the home side dared to dream. Barcelona gradually came into the game, however created very few clear cut chances.
A stern rearguard action from the blanquivioletas saw them hang on for the entirity of the second half to record a famous victory, moving out of the relegation places, at least until Almería take on Sevilla tomorrow, whilst Barcelona lose track in their bid for the title.
