The contest for the European Golden Shoe has become a battle between Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi in recent years, the Portuguese star having made museum exhibits of the last two.
After an explosive start to 2016, however, Benzema is also looking for a piece of the action. The 17 goals he has racked up in just 16 La Liga appearances have put him squarely in the frame as a Golden Shoe contender.
The Frenchman is enjoying his most impressive strike rate since making his debut with Olympique Lyon more than a decade ago.
Responsible for the goal against Valencia in the first game of the year, he then followed it up with a brace against Deportivo, putting away two more against Sporting Gijón and securing Real's sole effort against Betis - a strike that saved Zinedine Zidane from his first defeat.
Six goals in four games is a total which puts Benzema just a stone's throw from matching his best ever run of sharpshooting in his time as a 'Blanco'. The 28-year-old has scored in five consecutive La Liga matches on two previous occasions - in the 2013-14 season (between matchweek 11 and 15) and in 2014-15 (between the 9th and 13th games). Espanyol now have the dubious honour of being the next in line for the Real Madrid number 9 to get in some more target practice.
