Former Italy coach and Real Madrid sporting director Sacchi has backed José Mourinho's team selection in the Madrid goal, saying: "I can see why he picks Diego López"
Former Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi, who on Tuesday said that Real Madrid goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas "has never trained well", has made amends for his comments.Speaking on Spanish radio station 'COPE' on Thursday, Sachi said: "Iker Casillas used to train quite well at Real Madrid."
The day before, the Italian, who was Madrid's sporting director between 2004 and 2005, told the programme 'El Confidencial': "Iker Casillas has never trained well. [José] Mourinho is right to leave him out. I can see why he picks Diego López, because he gives the impression of being a really dependable player."
Despite returning to fitness from a hand injury, Casillas remains behind Diego López in the pecking order at Madrid.
The ex-AC Milan coach has publicly criticised Casillas before. In April 2005, Sacchi said: "He's one of the best goalkeepers in the world. I've told him that he has made as many saves in three months as the keepers playing in my teams made in five years. But he needs to keep his feet on the ground. He needs to be more level-headed, more intelligent."
