Madrid and Spain captain Iker Casillas has discussed his legacy, declaring: "I hope I'm remembered as a player who gave everything for Real and Spain."
Speaking in an interview for the car manufacturer Hyundai, Real Madrid and Spain captain Iker Casillas has expressed his desire to continue winning silverware and to "stay in the world of football when I hang up my boots". He also declared that his favourite trophy win so far is "the Champions League in 2000".
Casillas has obtained an impressive haul of medals during his career, but confessed that he has a soft spot for Madrid's European triumph under Vicente del Bosque 13 years ago - when goals from Fernando Morientes, Steve Mcmanaman and Raúl gave 'Los Blancos' a 3-0 win over Valencia in Paris - because "it was the first thing I won in my professional career and for the first trophy to be the Champions League was incredible."
Although the keeper has a long way to go until retiring, he discussed his legacy as a player - and hopes that he is remembered "as a player who wore the shirt of Real Madrid and Spain with pride and respect, and who gave everything for both shirts."
Reflecting on his career beginnings, Casillas - who is to lend his image to an advertising campaign for Hyundai - insisted that he would never forget the first goal he conceded: "It was [Athletic Bilbao forward] Julen Guerrero at San Mamés. We drew 2-2 and that day was my debut in a Real Madrid shirt."
Touching on his idols as a child, he explained that he was "a faithful follower of all the goalkeepers who have played for Real Madrid." However, he admitted that there was always one role model in particular: former Manchester United and Denmark keeper Peter Schmeichel.
Looking ahead to the future, Casillas said: "My aim is to win as much silverware as possible, because that makes me happy. I know that also makes the Madrid fans and all the supporters of the national team happy."
