Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat to Valladolid
on Saturday has still not really had time to properly sink in, and in
the hours that followed game the criticism was focused on who was at
fault. The Catalan sport papers 'Sport' and 'Mundo Deportivo'
both held a poll on their websites to find out popular opinion and both
ended up with the same conclusion: the slip-up in the Zorrilla was
mainly down to the players.
Both surveys showed that the finger was pointed far more at the Barça players than at the Argentinian coach Tata Martino. In 'Sport', 69% of voters blamed the players, while only 31% accused Tata. What’s more, 90% believed that Barcelona’s chances of winning the title are non-existent. Of the Barça players to feature on Saturday, Neymar (56%) and Messi (27%) came off worst.
In 'Mundo Deportivo', meanwhile, the gap was even greater between players and coach: 73% held the players responsible for the defeat in Valladolid, with the remaining 27% blaming Martino; 84% of those participating also felt that La Liga was now a lost cause.
The Board of Directors didn’t come out unscathed
It is worth mentioning that the polls held only gave voters the option to choose between the coach or the players, not the Sporting Directors or the Board. Nevertheless, the comments written by Culé fans did not let Zubizarreta, Bartomeu and the other Board Members off the hook, also blaming them for the current state of affairs. The lack of activity in last summer’s transfer market, as well as the circumstances surrounding the Neymar signing, were the focus of fans’ disgruntlement.
