Ancelotti's 'Rossoneri', then the Champions League holders, found themselves drawn against 'Super Depor' in the quarter-finals.
Real Madrid's visit to Deportivo is a chance for Carlo Ancelotti to bury some demons. The 55-year-old has had several bad experiences in Galicia, including last year's loss to Celta, who also defeated his Juventus side 4-0. But by far the rawest wound relates to the humbling his Milan team suffered at the Riazor back in the 2003-04 season.
Ancelotti's 'Rossoneri', then the Champions League holders, found themselves drawn against 'Super Depor' in the quarter-finals. The first leg was at the San Siro on 7th April 2004 and the Serie A giants made their pedigree show, cruising to a 4-1 victory.
In the away leg, however, Carletto's men were a shadow of themselves and succumbed to a 4-0 thrashing, meaning they were knocked out and Deportivo went through to the semi-finals.
That was not Ancelotti's first trip to the Riazor. Previously the Italian had enjoyed more promising results in La Coruña, drawing 1-1 there on his first visit with Juventus in 2000 and dishing out a 4-0 drubbing of his own with Milan in 2002-03. Nevertheless, it is the other 4-0 that has remained deeply ingrained in the coach's mind, and not just because it was the most recent, so the 'Los Blancos' boss will be targeting some long-awaited catharsis this weekend.
