Benzema continues Champions League love affair

Striker's fourth goal in competition

In the build-up to the match, everything seemed to point towards Gonzalo Higuaín being chosen to lead the Real Madrid frontline against Galatasaray, but José Mourinho opted to play Karim Benzema. The Portuguese may have been persuaded by the Frenchman's superb record in the competition; although his form in La Liga has been nowhere near as good and has played second-best to the Argentine for long spells of the season.
Benzema did not waste the opportunity and got his name on the score-sheet when he fired low past Fernando Muslera after a cross from Michael Essien. It was the French forward's fourth goal in the Champions League in 7 matches and he is the second top scorer for Real this season, with 16 strikes.
It seems Europe's most prestigious tournament suits Benzema down to the ground and his 18 goals means he has leapfrogged Fernando Morientes to become the third top goal-scorer for Real Madrid – behind Raúl González (66) and Cristiano Ronaldo (32). Benzema also moves level with David Trezeguet to become the second French goal-scorer in the history of the competition, with 30 goals.
